A Lesson from One Cute Niece in Ways to Prevent and Treat Acne

by Rowena French

We were delighted to agree to have our young niece Ally live with us when she started College in our state. Her time away from home for the first time was an adventure for us all. The most unexpected aspect of this was a lesson in ways to prevent and treat acne.

Ally is a popular student with lots of friends and an adoring boyfriend. She is studying Fashion and Design and loves clothes and cosmetics. She appears to have everything that any young 18 year old would want.

We are getting to know each other better and developing a closer relationship with each other. We want her to feel independent and happy but we have discovered that some things have need discussing from time to time. This included ways to prevent and treat acne and save the bath towels at the same time.

The laundry from last weekend was filled with surprises. Each of Ally’s brand new bath towels was stained with large white blotches. They looked awful.

When we inquired about these stains Ally clearly did not want to discuss them. She looked uncomfortable and her only response was that she used white towels at home. As I was replacing the ruined towels with the requested white, I realized the source of the problem was peroxide.

Ally was treating her acne with an acne product containing peroxide. This was why she spent so long in the bathroom and only used white towels at home. This was one of the very private ways to prevent and treat acne that she was using and it was working.

We were a little perplexed with the way Ally had tried to cover up her acne medication until we remembered how much effort so many adolescents make to control the acne in their lives. Just when they want to look good and be popular, they break out. Finding and using the best acne treatment was important to Ally despite the condition of our towels.

Our genes and our hormones are understood to be the greatest causes of acne. The American Academy of Dermatology research about teenage acne and young adult acne reveals that it is widespread. Around 80 percent of all young people from 11 and 30 suffer from acne at some time and are searching for ways to prevent and treat acne.

Ally is a smart young woman and had found correct information about acne control long before she came to live with us. We are impressed that she has found this way to prevent and treat acne and ignored the many myths about how to get rid of it.

Life with Ally continues to be interesting for her family, who she still refers to as cool despite the bathroom incident. She has never discussed the impact of her acne solution on our towels again and nor have we. We figure she is a very capable individual who does not need our help with controlling her acne!
