The Power of The Mind- Is There an Easy Way to Unlock It?
Science tells us that we currently use no more than 70% of our brain’s capabilities. Yet we struggle to cram our brains with content in this, the information age, where it seems to be particularly important to ‘know everything.’ Then too, along with the cramming comes the seemingly fantastical claims that we can ‘have it all’- including wealth, happiness, abundance, and breath-taking love- simply by making up our minds to it, and using our brains in a more productive fashion.
If you are interested in the power of the mind you can access a lot of tools to help you on your way. You can buy cards and mini-books created by famed affirmation-ist Louise Haye, and read them daily. You can join a 12-step program, such as Alanon (if you have or know someone who has an addiction.) If not, you can at least read the 12-step books and use the slogans daily. You can do meditations, and yoga, and a myriad of body-mind-spirit practices that will help you unlock the power of the mind by going within the body. All of these are valid and very beneficial.
It is the age of enlightenment. People speak all of the time about mind over matter and ways to increase your mental power. A lot of us believe in that. I know I do. But many of us also ask ourselves… “How do I actually do that?” Or even more to the point, “Can I actually do that?” And a lot of us have been working on just that skill for a lot of years. And we seem so far from our goals- even despite the fact that we human beings have a hard time acknowledging our successes.
If you are adventurous, you can take a life-changing course called The Landmark Forum. Here you will get to look at “mind over matter’ from a very different perspective. You will delve into the question “What does it mean to be human?” You will look at yourself as a human being and see how your very ’self’ was created. You can then dissect the process if you so desire to shift the very way you are, and become all that you want to be. During the process you will certainly look at how your brain operates, and when it empowers you, and when it (very frequently) dis-empowers you.
The mind is a very strange machine. It looks for and picks out oddities in your life. These are things that are not everyday occurrences- things like traumas, painful experiences, and scarring occurrences. It picks these out by the very nature of their oddity, and the mind then goes about the business of solving these ‘problems.’ Unfortunately the then gives a solution, which is a negative thought. This thought- one such as ‘don’t trust anyone’- then works against you in the future. And oftentimes you can’t even see these thoughts working in your brain.
One has to wonder if the mind truly can speak to the very cells in your body. One has to wonder if the claims people make about the mind’s power to cure all manner of diseases are really true. Can the mind cause you to lose weight effortlessly? Can you become a master at some unknown task overnight. Is it perhaps true that faith- your faith in your mind’s ability- can move mountains. If we believe, can we accomplish a miracle? And truly, this level of believing itself seems to be a miracle.
There is a lot of speculation that you can skip over the hard work of ‘mind over matter.’ They say that you can give up your daily affirmations and bathroom books and simply train the brain in any direction you want- while you lay there and relax, and listen to a CD or tape. What a wonderful idea? They call this method brain entrainment, and I am told there are no subliminal methods to worry about. Personally I am inclined to give this method a try, and stop working so hard.
Until then, my task as I look at brain entrainment, seems to be one and only one thing to keep doing it, plugging away at a steady pace, for a few minutes a day, every day. This may very well be the key that has me permanently increase mental power- no matter which methodology I choose.
